T.O.W.E.R. Awards 2019

Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative proudly announces that its Substation Technician, Mr. Johnny Talaban, was recognized as one of the awardees of “The Outstanding Workers of the Republic” (TOWER) in its Centennial Edition last June 13, 2019 at New Manila Hotel in Makati City.  This citation is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Manila in partnership with the People Management Association of the Philippines and Petron Foundation, Inc.   Out of 30 nominees nationwide, eight were shortlisted during the pre-screening last April and only seven were qualified as TOWER Awardees during the final panel interview last June 5 at Makati City.

The award aims to honor and recognize the country’s most outstanding skilled non-supervisory “blue collar” or “white collar” employees.  It also aims to inculcate pride in excellent and outstanding works of Filipino workers and help develop the value of hard work, critical and innovative and creative thinking at the workplace.

Qualified employees are those whose jobs are directly involved in the basic or main activities of the company and who have introduced extraordinary or innovative ideas, systems or designs that have brought beneficial results to the company and/or work environment in terms of improvements in quality, productivity, cost reduction, competitiveness, etc.

Talaban’s contribution to the industry was adjudged to be relevant to the economic and technical growth of the country.  He was one of the TOWER Awardees who were recognized, given a trophy and cash award at New World Hotel, Makati City last June 13 for his two sustainable innovations:

1. Installation of step-up transformer from 120 to 240 volts for single-phase low voltage output primary metering at Casoy, Tapi, Kabankalan to solve voltage problems at the mountainous areas of Kabankalan.

2. Modified external control on protection relays at Valladolid, Overflow and Cauayan substations for the safety of operators as they switch on and off the equipment and above all to minimize power interruptions and revenue losses.

His technical skills, experience and good attitude in operating electrical equipment enabled him to innovate which brought beneficial results to the Cooperative in terms of man-hour, energy, revenue, productivity, quality of work and community relations.

His innovations also minimize power interruptions and increase customer satisfaction of about 6,000 affected households.  Prior to the TOWER Award, Mr. Talaban was accorded as NOCECO Most Outstanding Employee in 2016 (Technical Level), his most significant achievement.

NOCECO is blessed to have efficient and committed employees.  Mr. Talaban is just one of them.  He started from a humble beginning as casual employee in June 2010.  Since the very beginning, he had already exhibited competence and character. He works beyond the call of duty and most often does not claim for overtime or extra pay.  In his nine years of service with the Cooperative, he displays good interpersonal relations and positive attitude.  He is not just an ordinary technician, but an expert metering and sub-station technician.  He is a total package of a good employee.

His innovations and consistent good performance motivate employees, not just of NOCECO, but also of other industries to perform well and innovate and come up with a realization that a very satisfactory work performance really pays.
